CARING FOR YOUR JEWELRY
Jewelry Care & Longevity
Even the most masterfully crafted jewelry requires deliberate care, particularly as the years pass. The longevity of an Allison Alane creation rests beautifully on how it is worn, cleaned, and preserved. By understanding the distinct nature of the rare materials within your collection, you can ensure each piece retains its character and narrative for a lifetime.
Daily Mindfulness & Storage Rituals
The Order of Adornment We recommend that your jewelry be the final touch of your morning ritual and the first element removed at night. Always remove your pieces prior to bathing, swimming, or applying lotions, perfumes, and sprays. Over time, these cosmetic particles can lodge within delicate settings, creating a residue that can dull the metal, compromise gemstones, and irritate the skin. (Please note: substances containing mercury cause instant, irreversible structural damage to gold).
Consider Your Activity To protect your pieces from unexpected impact, friction, or harsh chemicals, please remove them before:
-
-
Submerging in pools, hot tubs, or salt water (chlorine and salt are highly corrosive).
-
Rigorous exercise, sporting activities, gardening, or housework.
-
Sinks and Drains When cleaning or handling your pieces, we gently advise against working directly over an open sink. Jewelry and drains do not play well together; choosing a small, dedicated bowl for cleaning offers complete peace of mind.
Individual Sanctum When your jewelry is not being adorned, store each piece individually to prevent metals and stones from scratching one another. Within our studio, we preserve collections using velvet or linen pouches, as well as specialized anti-tarnish bags. Ensure your jewelry is completely dry before storing it in a safe, dry container.
Care by Material & Precious Metal
Solid Gold, Platinum & Palladium
While noble gold will not tarnish, it naturally gathers daily skin oils and dust, which can soften its brilliance. Because our designs often feature an intentional, elegant scratch texture, do not use a polishing cloth, as this will burnish the metal and rub away the signature matte finish.
-
-
The Ritual: Submerge the piece in a small bowl of warm water diluted with a few drops of mild, gentle dish soap for 3 to 5 minutes. Using a very soft-bristled toothbrush, gently sweep away any residue behind the tighter areas of the settings. Rinse thoroughly and pat completely dry with a lint-free cloth.
-
Bright & Tarnish-Resistant Sterling Silver
Our bright silver collections are composed of the finest materials, an alloy composed of Argentium silver 935, sterling silver 925, and fine silver 999. Silver naturally reacts to oxygen and everyday elements, developing a dark tarnish over time. To preserve the contemporary matte finish of our bright silver, avoid polishing cloths, which will alter the intended texture.
-
-
The Ritual: To slow the natural tarnishing process, wash the piece occasionally using warm water and either a mild soap or a gentle baking soda toothpaste, utilizing a soft toothbrush to reach intricate details.
-
For Lingering Tarnish: If oxidation persists, a gentle liquid dip tarnish remover may be used to restore the silver. Crucial Exception: Never allow a chemical dip to touch jewelry featuring organic or delicate materials, such as pearls or opals.
-
Metal Enhancements: Darkened Sterling Silver (Patina)
To achieve our distinctive, moody aesthetic, we hand-apply an artisanal liver-of-sulfur patina to instantaneously oxidize and blacken the silver. Because this beautiful, deep finish is a surface treatment, it is more susceptible to signs of wear and will naturally evolve according to your skin’s unique chemical makeup.
-
-
Preserving the Finish: Keep these pieces entirely dry and avoid all liquids, soaps, and chemicals.
-
Restoration: When not in use, keep your oxidized jewelry in a safe, dry container. Should you wish to return your piece to its original, richly darkened state, please contact the studio at info@allisonalane.com to arrange a professional re-patina service.

Care for Gemstones & Organic Materials
Certain gemstones do not tolerate water or traditional cleansing methods, so it is vital to understand your stone's specific nature. For an absolute, detailed guide to your specific piece, we invite you to explore our comprehensive Gemstone Library.
Diamonds & Hard Stones While diamonds are renowned for their exceptional hardness, they possess natural cleavage lines, internal grain structures where the crystal bonded. A sharp, precise impact at the wrong angle (such as striking a ring against a marble countertop) can cause a diamond to crack or chip, particularly along the exposed edges of the girdle. Treat your diamond settings with gentle care.
Opals & Moonstones Opals and moonstones possess a delicate crystalline structure that makes them significantly softer than diamonds. They chip, scratch, and crack easily under impact, and opals can fracture if exposed to extreme heat or sudden temperature shifts. Clean opals only with warm water and mild soap, never soak them, and keep them stored completely isolated from harder gemstones and metals.
Pearls & Knotted Silk Cord As organic treasures, pearls are soft, porous, and exceptionally sensitive to household cleansers, cosmetics, and hair care.
-
-
The Pearl Ritual: Gently wipe your pearls with a soft cloth slightly dampened with pure water after every wear to preserve the nacre's luster. Never store pearls in an airtight environment like a plastic bag. They contain trace amounts of moisture and need to "breathe"; denying them air will cause them to become brittle and lose their iridescence.
-
The Silk Ritual: Allison Alane pieces that feature traditional knotted strands must never be washed or submerged. Wetting the silk causes it to stretch and absorb dirt, weakening the strand. Simply wipe the beads down with a soft, clean cloth before storing.
-
Restringing: Over time and years of adoration, silk will naturally stretch. If you begin to notice extra space developing between the knots and the beads, it is time for your piece to be refreshed. Please contact the studio at info@allisonalane.com to coordinate our professional restringing service.

Professional Annual Maintenance
Just like any fine heirloom, an annual inspection ensures the longevity of your investment. We recommend having your jewelry professionally inspected once a year to check for shifting stones, worn prongs, or loosening clasps.
Between visits, personally examine your jewelry as you wear it. If you notice a stone catching on your garments or a clasp feeling less than secure, reach out to our Customer Care team at info@allisonalane.com so our artisan bench can restore your piece to pristine condition.
